I wrote some time ago that Syncrude should have immediately sat down and wrote out a cheque for a million dollars and fire it off to Ducks Unlimited after the disaster at one of its tailing ponds that killed 500 ducks. Now it looks more and more like they will indeed be writing a million dollar cheque. Unfortunately it will be made out to the Alberta government instead to pay the fines levied against them.
The decision on charges against the company that operates the pond, Syncrude Canada Ltd., is expected to be made by the end of August, said Stewart.
“The maximum penalty for this under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act is a $1-million fine,” he said.
They should have taken my advice. It would have been great PR. This, not so much...

Biofuel production boosts food prices by 75%, report suggests
The production of biofuels has driven up food prices 75 per cent, according to an unpublished World Bank report obtained by the Guardian.
In an article published Friday, the British daily cites a confidential report authored by Don Mitchell, a senior economist at the bank. The newspaper suggests the report has not been released so as not to embarrass U.S. President George Bush, whose government had suggested biofuels accounted for a three per cent increase in food prices.
"Without the increase in biofuels, global wheat and maize stocks would not have declined appreciably and price increases due to other factors would have been moderate," the report said, according to the Guardian.
The report also said changing diets in developing countries and a drought in Australia were not significant factors in driving up the price of food — which increased 140 per cent between 2002 and February 2008, according to the report.
Instead, a large-scale push in the U.S. and the European Union (EU) to convert food crops to biofuel has tightened supplies and raised financial speculation, said the report.

What boggles my brain is that they needed to "study" this to figure it out. It was pretty obvious to anyone with a bit of common sense. Then again, common sense is not very common, especially in the environMENTAList community.
Getting back to Alberta's so called "dirty oil" from the tar sands...

Let me tell you a dirty little secret(s)
Not everyone has jumped on the "anti tar sands" bandwagon. Some people realize you can't put the cart ahead of the horse. Reality is, there is currently NO viable replacement for oil at this time. Someday there will be, but right now it simply does not exist. For those of you who think you are saving the planet by using so called clean electric powered motors, whether they be in your car, lawnmower, or whatever, I ask of you one thing. Where does the electricity come from to power those motors? Chances are pretty good it comes from some dirty coal or gas fired power plant that is increasing its output to accommodate your extra usage. Keep on fooling yourselves...
For those of you who believe hydrogen powered vehicles are the answer, I have more questions. What portion of the upper atmosphere contributes more to so called global warming, CO2 or water vapor? What byproduct does hydrogen power produce? Let me help you out a bit. The answer for both is the same.
If some evil force decided to nuke Canada into oblivion and there by eliminating all of our CO2 contribution to the planet, it would hardly be negligible in the big picture. Yet some people think we should pay a heavy price now, even though we have no alternative to run our vehicles, heat our homes or power our lights. Dion will get your green and you will get the shaft. There is no "shift" here. Dion claims that his policy will be revenue neutral. That may be the case for the government, but it surely won't be for your bank account. His claim that his plan will not effect the price of gasoline is garbage. It puts a price on carbon and gasoline is one of those sources. It may not be directly placed on gas so technically he is not lying but he is seriously trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Wool you will be needing badly come those cold winter months when you are forced to turn down your thermostat even further so you can afford to pay the bills. The price of gas will go up reflecting the added cost of oil production due to Dions green shift plan, don't be fooled.
There is an old adage, "If you got it, it came by truck". I challenge you to name one possession of yours that at some point was not in the back of a truck. Your food, clothing, furniture, appliances, even your dental floss at some point was moved by truck. EVERYTHING is going to cost you more,EVERYTHING. This will be over and above the already steady increases we are seeing now in the market. How much more can we afford? You can only cut back so much before you have to start going without something.
Some people don't want Canada's (read Alberta and Saskatchewans) dirty oil. Good luck with that! Let me know how much more you are paying to have that black gold shipped from the middle east to meet the demand. Meanwhile we will just ship our oil to where it is welcomed. The oil tanker companies will laughing all the way to the bank, while spewing tons of CO2 into the air as they cruise back and forth across our oceans. How ironic!
Lastly, lets see what happens if Alberta actually is forced to play its Wild Card. You think prices are high now? Just you wait and see what will happen if this should come about. I seem to recall someone saying something about some people freezing in the dark way back when. I think that was the "Profit" Ralph was it not? It was a very popular bumper sticker regardless...
Wake up people. Use that brain matter to see that tree in the forest. Let your common sense prevail and don't believe all the crap you are fed on a daily basis by people who simply want to take your money for no other reason than that they think they know how to spend it better than you do. People who have way more money than you I might add...

Unbelievable!
Is Canada's "New government ™" out of its frickin' mind? I am no greenie, nor am I an EnvironMENTAList but I certainly do enjoy our great outdoors. Who in their right minds would even consider this never mind think it is an acceptable solution to dispose of tailing wastes from mines. Give your heads a shake people.
Lakes across Canada to be turned into mine dump sites
CBC News has learned that 16 Canadian lakes are slated to be officially but quietly "reclassified" as toxic dump sites for mines. The lakes include prime wilderness fishing lakes from B.C. to Newfoundland.
Environmentalists say the process amounts to a "hidden subsidy" to mining companies, allowing them to get around laws against the destruction of fish habitat.
Under the Fisheries Act, it's illegal to put harmful substances into fish-bearing waters. But, under a little-known subsection known as Schedule Two of the mining effluent regulations, federal bureaucrats can redefine lakes as "tailings impoundment areas." [...]

Whichever way it is looked at, Britain is threatened by what, thanks to years of dereliction and misjudgment, has become arguably our most serious potential crisis of modern times.
Politically, the blame for this astounding mess lies in all directions - with the Tories, with Labour, with Brussels, with those smugly shortsighted 'environmentalists'.
But all that matters now is that we put the need to avert this disaster right at the top of our national political agenda.
We need to get on with solving as terrifying a problem as our politicians have ever faced.

Global Warming my ass
Not physically speaking of course, as it is a tad cool for this time of year and my ass has been cold for the most part.
The lack of global warming in BC is helping to fight the war on drugs. Does Canada have a war on drugs? Anywho...
Wet weather across British Columbia is threatening profit margins for producers of one of the province's largest — although illegal — cash crops — outdoor marijuana.
B.C. has endured weeks of unseasonable drizzle and grey skies this spring with temperatures touching record lows in the months of May and June, and growers are worried about mildew killing the seedlings.
Gotta love it. First it is yet another nail in the Church of Climatologies coffin and as a side bonus we might have less drugs on the streets. Its a twofor...
Meanwhile.... a little further south they are no better off. Maybe a bit worse off...
Winter-like weather returned to the Northwest as snow fell across the state Tuesday including on Mount Hood where drivers were dealing with unusual weather for this time of year.
And while it didn't cause major problems, most people were asking, "What happened to spring?"
The snowfall at Timberline Tuesday was amazing, blowing snow and ice most of the day. There was packed snow and ice on the roadway that turned to slush in some spots and the trees were coated thickly.
Even though the Fourth of July is less than a month away to many it seemed more like February.
Yup, our planet is certainly warming... LMAO

I hate to burst your bubble on this "historic day" Prime Minister Harper. However, you did not apologize for "all Canadians" today. A whole lot of us have nothing to apologize for. Our ancestors had nothing to do with any of this and neither did we, yet we shall pay with our tax dollars in yet another feel good deed by our government.

In a shocking turn of events
Last month, polar bears were listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act because their sea ice habitat is melting away... (That melting part is still up for debate. Just like the whole Global Warming, we are all going to die thing.)
The first polar bear to been seen in Iceland in 20 years was SHOT DEAD!

U.S. energy subsidies
Not what you might think, or have been led to believe...
Congress seems ready to spend billions on a new "Manhattan Project" for green energy [...]
[...] For electricity generation, the EIA concludes that solar energy is subsidized to the tune of $24.34 per megawatt hour, wind $23.37 and "clean coal" $29.81. By contrast, normal coal receives 44 cents, natural gas a mere quarter, hydroelectric about 67 cents and nuclear power $1.59. [...]
[...] The same study also looked at federal subsidies for non-electrical energy production, such as for fuel. It found that ethanol and biofuels receive $5.72 per British thermal unit of energy produced. That compares to $2.82 for solar and $1.35 for refined coal, but only three cents per BTU for natural gas and other petroleum liquids.
All of this shows that there is a reason fossil fuels continue to dominate American energy production: They are extremely cost-effective. That's a reality to keep in mind the next time you hear a politician talk about creating millions of "green jobs." Those jobs won't come cheap, and you'll be paying for them.

Stop the apologies already
How far back do we go with all these apologies? They were different times with different prevailing ideologies. We cannot logically judge now the decisions made by past governments, 94, nor 50, 40 or even 30 years ago.
Why does Harper insist on apologizing for all the past deeds done by past governments of this country? Other than pandering for votes that is...
Mr. Harper, let me help you out here.
We the government of Canada, apologize to every person in the past, present and future that we may have offended or will offend, for any and all reasons. Send one dollar to every person on the planet for compensation (cause we know it's not about the money... right...), as I am sure that somewhere, somehow, we have offended every single one of them or their ancestors. That would be somewhere between 6 and 7 billion dollars by the way (which sounds a lot better than mere millions)... and lets call it a done deal.

On Friday, The Wall Street Journal published a report that suggested closer ties between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and rebels attempting to overthrow Colombia's government. Chavez has been linked to Colombian rebels previously, but the paper reported it had reviewed computer files indicating concrete offers by Venezuela's leader to arm guerillas. That appears to heighten the chances that the U.S. could impose sanctions on one of its biggest oil suppliers.
I am sure, most Albertans would much rather see our so called "dirty" oil go to the U.S. than anywhere else. I am also sure most Americans would rather buy our oil than from some slimy dictator...
We pay them for this?
