Whats next

A government permit to buy alcohol? Junk food? Fast food? How about to buy ski's. A parachute? To go rock climbing? Bungee jumping? Ski-dooing? Where does this sort of socialist thinking end? Nanny state contemplates smoking licence.

No one would be able to buy cigarettes without the permit, under the idea proposed by Health England. [...]

Professor Le Grand, a former adviser to ex-PM Tony Blair, said cash raised by the proposed scheme would go to the NHS.

He said it was the inconvenience of getting a permit - as much as the cost - that would deter people from persisting with the smoking habit.

"You've got to get a form, a complex form - the government's good at complex forms; you have got to get a photograph.

"It's a little bit of a problem to actually do it, so you have got to make a conscious decision every year to opt in to being a smoker." [...]

A complex form with photo? Why not just make smoking illegal and be done with it? Oh thats right, the government needs the massive amounts of taxes garnered from smokers to fund the next stupid study for the next stupid idea some socialist comes up with to ban something. (sarc) But hey... lets legalize drugs! ya thats the ticket! They don't hurt anyone at all.... (/sarc)

If I was a smoker, which I was at one time, and they went to that extreme, it wouldn't take me long to learn to grpw my own. Government should only dealing with what they government should be dealing with... and that's it... securing of the state, protecting the people, and trade....grrrrrr.

I am still a stupid smoker... can't be too smart going out in -40 to suck back a bunch of toxins... lol

But the point is... that is MY choice and nobody else's to decide, let alone some looney socialists who wants the world to be their little utopia. Their utopia looks nothing like mine. In mine, people mind there own business, not others, especially when they are not breaking any real laws. Real laws being ones that actually protect people from actual criminal acts. Not ones that protect hurt feelings or this sort of non sense...

I agree with you Tim... the attack on personal choice is plain wrong on all levels. I don't care who smokes... or who jumps off a bridge for that matter. It's their choice, they must be the ones to deal with any consequences it brings them, and don't give me any crap about health system, etc., the extra taxes paid, and reduced life span far offset the total cost to society.
