Negatively Thinking

If there is one thing that I can't stand above all in the political world, it would have to be attack ads. Negative campaigns drive me nuts. Show me your platforms, tell me what YOU HAVE done. Unfortunately some advertising folks discovered that it's better to attack your opponent so this is what we now get. Is there an election coming soon? Apparently so, as the conservatives are about to launch the first salvo.

The Conservative party intends to run TV attack ads against new Liberal leader Stephane Dion, CTV News has learned.

Party insiders say the Conservatives will buy TV spots during the Super Bowl and other prime time slots for maximum impact.

Maximum impact alright. Something tells me that this will be an expensive lesson on how to make a smoking gun blow up in your face. Not to mention that this is taking place outside on an election. What are they thinking? If they think Dion is getting a free ride in the press, then maybe they are doing something wrong and are not doing a very good job of getting their message out? Time for a new strategy, but personally I think this one is not the answer. I am fairly POSITIVE of this one....

Sheeesh... how can you be so POSITIVE when your whole post was so NEGATIVE on the whole issue... LOL

I haven't been impressed with a lot of things with the so called "Conservative" party lately. There's no one to vote for ... :-( ... must be time for Alberta to leave! ...

I haven't been impressed with politicians in general for a long time. I was hoping that Harper would be different. Power corrupts as usual.....

The problem here is that Harper, while in opposition to the Liberal "Dion-nothing" On the Environment also did nothing. They never raised the question on GHG emmission, they never question the Liberals on why they (the Liberals) were not doing more to protect and clean up the Environment.

In short the CPC and Harper were more than willing to allow the Liberals to do nothing and get away with it. The reason for this is clearly obvious and there is no reason to debate it.

So what do you do when everyone is suddenly turning green and your pst record is more the color of oil? Well simple, blame the other guy and completely ignore your own record of past inaction.

This is why I look at the CPC and Liberals as beginning equally dedicated to the Environment, they aren't, it is the political flavour of the month to them and as soon as Mr. Baird "Fixes It" (aka blame the liberals all the time) the issue will die and they hope it will go away (and so many of the hardcore CPC Harper-bot hate Harper's new green suit and want it to go away)

This is the reason why it is very important that Lizzy May gets into the debates to hold other morons feet to the fire. Hopefully this will allow a few Green Seats to be won.

The CPoC will be wasting tax dollars if they go ahead with this negative campaign. All they really have to do is let Dion run his mouth. He'll beat himself up, if his uttereances to date are any indication!

Zorph, it does sound like for the most part, these ads will focus on the enviroment front. You know where I stand on that one. Who is in power in this country does not matter. Who is sitting in the seats of the house does not matter. It is all hollywood smoke and mirrors. Not one politicain gives a crap about the country anymore. Its all about "me, power, money" plain and simple.

No tax dollars here Chimera. These ads are being paid for and brought to you by CPoC. I do agree re: "All they really have to do is let Dion run his mouth. He'll beat himself up, if his uttereances to date are any indication!"

I just don't get the thought pattern involved here with these ads or even the need to run such ads.

While you and I may debate the finer points of GW/GCC and the various effects, we are both very much on the same page, just arguing about who the page whould be layed out ;-)

As for our views on Politicals, we both agree about the page, who it reads, and it reads very poorly.

We need leadership, action and solutions. Unfortinately there is very little of these three in Ottawa, regardless of the which party sits in power.

"This is gonna bite them in the ass HUGE !!!!"

I doubt it.

Over at StageLeft I found a bunch of links on Liberals attacking new conservative leaders when there was no election announced. (It's sitting in moderation somewhere.)

Sadly, this is the way politics are done in Canada (although we are still miles from our southern friends for vitriol). The CPoC wanted to define Dion before he could. The fact that they are using clips from the leadership debates is just gravy, as they've got Libs calling him out so they don't have to.

From my perspective, I'd prefer these sorts of ads weren't (a) successful and (b) commonplace, but they are. We aren't in Kansas anymore.

If they keep them focused on Dion's personal record (crappy) and the Liberal gov'ts record (equally crappy), then I can live with my donations paying for them. The minute they get personal (like the idiot Chretien ad run under Kim Campbell), or so over-the-top as to be obscene like the "soldiers in our cities" nonsense, I'll pull the plug.

I agree that it won't be HUGE as Dazz puts it, but I really don't think that A) they were even needed B) that they will change anyones mind on Dion

Dion is doing a fine job of defining himself as Chimera eliquantly points out. The "they did so why can't we" thing does not fly in my air space. I might add that these are far from "attack add's" as they have been portrayed in the media. I would rather see add's showing the positive things that the Harper government has done in the short time they have been in power. Go positive and leave the liberals to do all the negative crap. I voted for the CPOC because I wanted a change, not just in name but in actions. The longer the CPOC is in power the more they remind me of the tired ol liberals as of late.
