Let me be perfectly clear. I am a white man. A first generation Canadian on my fathers side and forth generation on my mothers side. My heritage may not be long in this land but my roots are deep. Both my great grandfather and my grand father came to Canada a did pretty much exactly the same things. They purchased land in undeveloped parts of what is now Alberta and homesteaded. They cleared the land mostly by pure physical labour. They worked long hard hours to turn forest into farm land. They built homes from the timber they cut and then worked the fields hoping to make ends meet. They became Canadians and were very proud of doing so. Their goals were simple, to make a better life for themselves and their families. It was not easy, nor did they expect it to be. They never went looking for handouts. When things did not work out for my grandfather in farming, he turned back to what he knew, coal mining. He packed up the family and moved clear across Alberta to a small coal mining community and started over again. Our families may not have had the greatest of lives but they never suffered, as they were always willing to do what needed to be done. It is known as working for a living. It seems to have rubbed off on all the generations that followed as we all have done the same thing. I can happily say that none of my relatives have ever gone looking for handouts to get them by.
I tell you all of this, as I simply cannot fathom the attitude of the "you owe me" crowd. I don't care if it comes from the First Nations people or anyone else in Canada. No one owes you anything! You get what you earn. If you want a free ride, then you should live in poverty and struggle. If you want a better life, get off your ass and earn it, the same way the rest of do! Yes there are exceptions... eg: the severely handicapped... although I do know a couple of people who are just that and they work harder than a lot of people out there including myself.
A year or so ago I worked out what each First Nations member would receive if the tax dollars allotted for INAC were divided up evenly amongst them instead of going into the bureaucracy. It worked out to something like $12,000.00 to every single man woman and child. A family of four would receive $48,000.00 tax free dollars. Now add the average Income of a single earner family household of $46,699.00(2001 statcan) and you have $94,699.00. That is $21,879.00 more than the average family with two income earners ($72,820.00 2001 statcan)
Tell me now that the Canadian government does not give enough to the people of First Nations. The money is not the problem if you ask me. It is the system that is the problem. Ever seen a poor bureaucrat? How about a poor Chief? Me neither...
The whole focus of this issue is wrong. Dead wrong. Face up to the facts. No matter how much Natives receive, it will never be enough for some. They will always demand more. They will not settle for anything less than getting the whole country back. Like any of it actually belonged to them in the first place. Natives and non natives have fought for, won and lost land as long as man has walked on this earth. It continues to this day. Anyone remember the USSR?
Canada still has no property rights. No one in this country can legally own anything. We are allowed to have possession of things as long as the government allows it. We are all screwed, natives and non natives alike.

I have fallen a bit behind as you can tell from the lack of posts here. Fishing is priority number one! Blogging is just a time killer, and we here in the great white north have way to little warm weather in our short summers to waste at a computer.
Ted Byfield had an interesting article on Global Warming in the Calgary Sun last Sunday that I almost missed.
Global warming skeptics score a few points[...] In the last week, the skeptics scored two goals.
The first was scored by a Canadian. Timothy Patterson, director of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre at Carleton University in Ottawa, published an article conclusively demonstrating climate change is a permanent condition, that the Earth's climate has never been stable. [...]
[...] The second goal was far more devastating. It came with a book just published by Henrik Svensmark, director of the Centre for Sun Climate Research at the National Space Centre in Copenhagen. He calls it The Chilling Stars: A New Theory on Climate Change.

He has established a laboratory in which the sun's rays and Earth's atmosphere have been set up in model, and the cosmic effects on the Earth thereby observed.

The Hero Behind the Wheel
99% of the time, when a commercial truck is mentioned in the news, it is to bash the trucking industry in general. They never mention the safety record of the industry. They never mention that 95% of the accidents that commercial trucks are involved in are not the fault of the professional driver involved, but that of the other driver(s). They don't mention that if all vehicles had to be inspected as thoroughly as commercial trucks, there would certainly be a lot less vehicles on the road. Generally speaking, commercial vehicles are the safest, best maintained and well driven vehicles on the road. This story is one of the few exceptions to the rule...
David Virgoe: 48 years old, Veteran driver with 26 years experience behind the wheel, Perfect safety record, Won numerous awards for his safety awareness. Died June 18,2007 while avoiding a packed minivan after being cut off by suspected street racers on Hwy 400 near Toronto.
Mr. Virgoe had to make a split second decision. In the back of his mind he knew he could hit the minivan and easily survive the ensuing collision. He knew if he did so, he would certainly seriously injure if not kill the occupants of that minivan and perhaps others on the highway. He also knew that by avoiding the minivan, he was taking a bigger risk regarding his own fate. Mr. Vigroe chose the latter of the two as I suspect most professional drivers would.

The low income earners of Canada want amendments made to the federal budget that would transfer some of the income of "the rich" to those whom make less of an income. This program shall here on in be referred to as the "Robin Hood Accord" or its acronym RHA.
The RHA would have the government take all income above the average for an individual and redistribute it to those who have a lower income. This income sharing will continue even if at some point those individuals income who receive RHA transfer payments, rises above those of the above average income earners. There will be no consideration given for the numbers of hours worked, how hard one had to work or the education required to make the above average income.
It is the Canadian way...

I Want A Refund
and I want it now. Talk about being over taxed! Governments of all levels in Canada managed to gather 29 Billion more tax dollars than they required, according to STATS Canada. Thats 29 Billion with a B people. 29 with nine zeros following it. This is not chump change...
Based on the Canadian population clock, this works out to roughly $880.49 for every man woman and child in Canada. Keep in mind that a big chunk of that population pay no taxes at all, so the actual amount over payed by "tax payers" is even higher than this amount.
Now to be fair, this country has a huge debt. If this surplus was being put directly towards paying off that debt, or if I at least saw some value for my money, I would not be as pissed off as I am about this. Driven around on Edmonton's roads lately? Its a disgrace...
It does not help that my property taxes went up by 13.5%, compliments of Alberta's "market value assessment" and a 4.95% tax hike by the city of Edmonton.
What do you think my employer would tell me if I demanded a 13.5% raise?

(CNSNews.com) - Call it green pollution. The ethanol industry, which is marketed as environmentally friendly and has been called a "cornerstone of America's energy policy," is dirtying air and water supplies across the heartland, according to a Cybercast News Service investigation.
And industry watchers said pollution is going to get worse.
"There seems to be this mad rush toward expansion of the alternative fuels industry without sufficient due diligence," said Bill Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies (NACAA).
The Renewable Fuels Association, a major industry lobbying group, lists 119 working ethanol refineries in the United States, with another 77 refineries being built as of June 1.
Federal and state environmental agencies are responsible for monitoring the plants and making sure they follow local and national clean air and water guidelines. Those agencies have been busy.
A Cybercast News Service analysis of EPA records found 73 biorefineries - more than 60 percent of those operating - were cited by state or federal agencies for environmental violations in the last three years. The vast majority involve state or federal clean air laws.[...]

The littlest Hobo's are robbing our trains. The cute little buggers, three black bear cubs, are causing a bit of trouble in Yoho National Park.
From CBC...Rocky Mountain bear cubs ride the railsA trio of hobo bear cubs have been hopping trains in the Rocky Mountains, sparking concern from wildlife officials.
The black bear cubs first climbed onto a Canadian Pacific Railway car on May 31 in Yoho National Park, which is in the Rockies in British Columbia, about 30 kilometres west of Lake Louise, Alta.
Parks Canada wardens suspect the cubs climbed up to feed on grain with their mother, who managed to hop off when the train started moving.
The distressed cubs were stuck until the crew of another train spotted them. The train stopped in Field, B.C., and wardens brought the cubs back to their mother.
But two days later, the cubs boarded a train car for a second time. This time, two residents of Field heard the bears' cries and the trio was once again reunited with mom.
Mother Bear is quoted saying.... "If this is the trouble they are causing now as infants, what can I expect from them when they reach their teens? Cubs these days!"

The childish games continue at all levels of government within our country. I simply don't know how our politicians can look at themselves in the mirror each morning without breaking out in uncontrollable laughter. After all, they all seem to be permanently stuck in clown mode.
I just don't get it. These are suppose to be the leaders of our country. The cream of the crop. We no longer have leaders. The cream has gone bad. All things political have turned into a joke and it does not matter what party you support. They are all the same at all levels of government. Name calling... Me me me attitude... very little if any compromise... totally unrealistic expectations... Accountability is non existent... not to mention that they seem to think that acting like preschoolers is perfectly normal and acceptable.
What these jokers continually seem to forget is that they are working for the people of this country. The money that they are all fighting over comes from only one source. Taxes! Politicians take note... IT IS NOT YOUR MONEY! It is ours, and we entrust you with the job of spending it wisely. You are failing in that regard in a way that is beyond abysmal. If governments were companies, very few if any politicians, would ever keep their jobs. They would be fired for incompetence.

More bad news for Gore. Even less of his so called "documentary" is the truth. It would be more suitable in the fiction section. There was more factual material in an episode of Gilligan's Island than there is in Al's movie.

Money for nothing, whether it be on a local level or the international level, does nothing to help those that receive it get out from under its umbrella.

They talked about Calgary and how things have changed there in the past 15 years or so. Not for the better. Social services is a big part of the problem, and not just in Calgary but Canada in general. It is well worth the time it takes to listen to it.

Not surprisingly, some "we know better than you types" have sent out some letters to members of the Canadian Forces in Quebec. The letter suggests that the members of the Van Doos should break the law and turn their backs on their fellow soldiers.
Via CTV (Canadian Press)[...] The first of about 3,000 letters mailed by antiwar protesters are expected to start showing up in neighbourhoods around the military base in Valcartier, Que., home to the Royal 22nd Regiment.
More than 2,000 Van Doos, as they're known, are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan beginning in August.
"You can refuse to participate in this war,'' says the missive, mailed last week by four Quebec-based antiwar groups. [...]
I very much doubt that any of the soldiers that receive this mail out will take it seriously. I'm not even sure that it will make it to the recycle bin as it absolutey belongs in the garbage!
If You Can't Beat Em
Join em... or so the saying goes. Apple has been around as long as any of the other major computer makers. Yet it still only manages to garner a very small share of the computer market. Depending on your point of view, that can be a good thing.
By having such a small market it does afford a bit of protection for its users. Very few malicious minded people will spend the time to write code that will attack so few when they can put the fear into millions more far easier on the windows platform. That does go both ways though. Few legitimate software developers will invest the money, time and effort to develop programs for the Mac platform for the very same reasons. The other problem that a lot of people had with Mac's was its very proprietary platform. It limited what could be done to modify a Mac. Things are changing at Apple.
A while back Apple announced that it was switching from IBM's Power PC CPU's to Intel CPU's.
Today, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs announced that Mac's internet browser, Safari, which only has 5% of the browser market, is now also available free for the PC. This is a beta version which might have a few bugs to work out, but I am going to give it a try, even if it is just for giggles a shits...
I can't help but wonder if these are just the first steps towards taking a bigger leap into the PC realm for Apple?

Stupid is
What stupid does... Can anyone explain to me why anyone would build a community in an area that is prone to disasters? There are reasons that way back when, the native peoples of North America, placed their camps where they did.
They knew that certain area's had problems. Maybe not today. Not next week. Maybe not this year even. They knew from the past that certain area's were just not a good place to live. Even for the short term, never mind permanently. They would never make camp on a flood plain. They would never make camp in the lowest part of a valley. They would never make camp in area's covered by water They would never make camp at the bottom of a mountain that rumbled. They would never make camp on ground that shook.
By now I would hope you get my point. So when, and why on earth would we decide that we could safely build permanent communities in these area's? Is it worth the risk? Why would we rebuild those same communities after they are ruined by natural disasters that are bound to happen again? Are we truly that stupid? As far as I am concerned, as I sit in my relatively well situated home high above the river valley, anyone that choses to live in area's prone to natural disasters are on their own. It is your choice to be their. Don't whine and expect the tax payers to foot the bill to help you rebuild and have the same happen time and time again. Maybe if you are lucky, it is only a one hundred year event that most likely won't effect you personally again. Maybe not. Is it really worth the risk not to mention the stress and headaches it causes?

The Worst is Over
I think? I managed to get everything back and re organized in a manner that I like. I don't think I will be changing templates again any time soon! I did find a few useful widgets to add more function to this blog.
"Recent comments" is one I particularly like.
I also found a little java script that add a little music player function each time I link to a song. You will see a small green arrow in front of a link to a song. Simply right click on the arrow to play. If you want the music to stop, click on the small red box that the arrow has changed to.
I am now playing with yet another java script that will allow me to add slide shows to posts.
Lastly I will be adding the peekaboo script. This script is used to show only a summary of a post. This keeps the main page a little more manageable and user friendly.

How Long
Will it take for some other research to come and say that THIS is a bad idea. Just like when they said butter is bad for you. Eggs are bad for you. fatty meat is bad for you. etc... ad nauseam... One line should get your attention in the article right off the bat...

Well I don't know about you but I sure am glad that they have cleared this one up. A study out of the University of Alberta shows that buying organic food products will not save the planet. Surprisingly(sarc) it takes the same amount of energy to produce and ship the organic product as it does non organic product. I am shocked I tell you, SHOCKED! Thank god for higher education.

I Came Back
Well... in body anyways. My mind is still at the lake , and usually is.
The fishing was a tad slow, but the sheer raw beauty of the place always makes it worth while. The bald eagles, osprey, loons, pelicans and many other flying objects are all back. I never tire of seeing them. There where no shortage of deer on the drive into the lake or back. I lost count both ways. On a sad note there is one less beaver swimming around by the boat dock. Not sure what caused its death as I could not find anything obvious although the ravens had started scavenging on its remains prior to me discovering it by the dock. I doubt that I will find any sign of its remains come next weekend. Nature will have done its job by then I am sure.
I was planning on taking a few pictures to post here. Unfortunately, silly me did not pick up some new batteries for my camera and the existing batteries were pretty much dead. I managed to get one shot of some friends fishing off in the distance but was unable to get another when I came across the bald eagles.
I will be better prepared for next weekend! Murphy's law should kick in and although I will have a fully charged camera, I will not see anything worth taking a picture of... sigh...

If the Sierra Legal Defense Fund on behalf of "Friends of the Earth" can take our current government to court to try and force them to abide by Kyoto, then why should we not sue the Liberals for not doing anything re Kyoto while they were in government? It was after all their inaction that has brought us to the point where it is economic suicide to even try to reach our 2008 - 2012 Kyoto commitment. We the people of Canada are not at fault. The Liberal government of the time failed to act, so why should we have to pay for the cost of this court case. Then there is the costs of actually fulfilling our commitment should The Sierra Legal Defense Fund win this suit. Who is gonna pay for the costs of meeting Kyoto?

As we all know, all these shootings McGuinty speaks of, are done with legally registered guns right? People who wish to use guns in any crime would never use an illegal gun, that would be well... illegal! How many times do we have to engage in this ridiculous "Ban the guns" and all will be well in the world bullshit? A ban on guns only manages to keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. They will never keep guns out of the criminals hands.
Just to prove my point, CTV was kind enough to provide another story today, that is very relevant. Ontario school in lockdown after gun goes missing.
Reports say an undercover Kitchener police officer left a duty bag near the inner-city school. The bag contained pepper spray, a 9-mm handgun, ammunition and handcuffs.
When the officer returned, the gun was missing.
What on earth this officer was thinking leaving a gun laying around unattended, I have no idea. I am sure more details will come out shortly. Now because of this careless act, another "illegal" handgun is on the streets to be used by a criminal. If not the criminal who stole the gun in the first place, then the criminal it is sold or given to.
One last comment. How will any of the beefed up security measures in schools, or bans on legal guns, ever prevent shootings from happening off of school premises and with illegal guns? It won't, but the measures taken sure will make about 67% of the people "feel" better. Politicians like to make people "feel" better, even when they know it won't make a bit of difference, except in their polling numbers that is...

For the 12th time, justice was served in California today. The first was when he was convicted, and the other eleven were due to the fact that he was denied parole time and time again. At 72, Charles Milles Maddox was yet again denied parole today for the 11th time. Who the hell is Charles Milles Maddox? If the title of this post did not clue you in, then you are very young or have lived in a cave all your life. You may know him better by another name... Charles Manson

The Right to Remain Silent
I thought that that right meant that you did not have to say anything to the police if you chose not to. Not that the police had to be silent as well... Is repeatedly talking to a suspect by police going to be considered unethical or even torture? Another unworthy case was heard by the Supreme Court of Canada today.

Compelled? No he wasn't. He gave into the questioning by the officers and confessed to the crime he was accused, and later found guilty of. He gave up his right to silence at that point. That was his choice. He and he alone made that decision.

Canada's highest court heard an appeal Tuesday focusing on a drug-sniffing dog that uncovered five bags of marijuana and 10 magic mushrooms in the backpack of an Ontario high school student during a police sweep.
At issue is whether the unannounced police visit to the school in 2002 amounted to an unreasonable search under the Charter of Rights.
The incident launched a five-year court battle over privacy rights that has gone all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
A decision is expected next fall in a case that will help determine whether police can use sniffer dogs to conduct random searches at schools and other public places including malls, parks, sport arenas and beaches.
The court will decide whether the unannounced police visit to St. Patrick's high school in Sarnia, Ont. on November 2002 amounted to an unreasonable search and seizure under the Charter of Rights. [...]
If you are in a public place, no matter who the hell you are, and a trained police dog signals to its handler that you are in possession of illegal substances of any kind, that in itself should be grounds for that officer to take further action. It is that simple.
Humour me for just one moment...
Lets say that this sniffing dog was trained to detect explosives. Under the exact same circumstances as in this case, this kids backpack was singled out by the dog and explosives were found contained within. Do you honestly think this case would have ever gone this far? I really don't think so. The dog and his handler would be paraded around the country as heroes who quite possibly saved the lives of hundreds of students. In my mind they are heroes for taking those drugs out of the school and away from the students who could have potentially bought and used them. Illegal drugs do not belong in schools, period. Students should expect that these searches could and will occur.
But it was ONLY drugs, so whats all the fuss? If the SCOC comes to the same conclusion as the lower courts have, and deem this as an unreasonable search under the Charter of Rights, then it will extend to all public places. The heroes I created above would never exist. Of all the public places out there, airports would be the best example... air India comes immediately to mind. Look what happened when the dogs were not allowed to do their job.
Is that the Canada you want to live in? Not me...

This weekends global warming roundup
One thing is certain about global warming. Al Gore is making a ton of money off of it. Schools around the globe are making Al's fiction mandatory watching with very little if any balancing views from the other side. Gore smiles every time another school board jumps on the band wagon, as he watches his bank account climb.
Hand it to Paramount, the studio behind An Inconvenient Truth, for tapping the classroom market in a way skeptics cannot.
In addition to a companion book written for school-aged children, producers have created a lesson plan, "AIT in the Classroom," for teachers to download.
In England, the government has made the movie part of the public curriculum.
In Spain, the government is buying copies of the movie for all of its schools. In Australia, private donors are buying copies for schools.
Politicians and educators may accept on face value filmed warnings of a world tumbling toward catastrophe if we don't dramatically cut back on our greenhouse gas emissions.
But some of Mr. Gore's allies have acknowledged glaring inaccuracies in the film.

The Global Warming Myth?
Why don't we hear about this part of the global warming argument? "It's the money!" said Dr. Baliunas. "Twenty-five billion dollars in government funding has been spent since 1990 to research global warming. If scientists and researchers were coming out releasing reports that global warming has little to do with man, and most to do with just how the planet works, there wouldn't be as much money to study it."
$25 BILLION for the alarmists compared to $23 million from the skeptics. Talk about comparing apples to oranges! Yet Green Peace and others are worried? Why is that?
To end off on a positive note... fear not my fellow humans. The end is not near. Global warming has taken a back seat in Kamloops, B.C., which is good news for the forest industry.
Entomologist Lorraine Maclauchlan with the B.C. Forest Service says a cool spring has lead to a slow season so far.
North and central Saskatchewan seem to have been spared as well.
On Friday, a day when many people were loading up their cars for a Victoria Day getaway, there was snow and colder-than-normal weather in north and central Saskatchewan.
The cold and wet weather here in Alberta also canceled my plans to head up north for a bit of fishing. The price of gas did not help any!
The New Snow day
Instead of waiting for mother nature to dump a ton of snow in your area to close down the schools, simply make a call or send an email mentioning the word "kill" or "bomb". We can call it snow job day. The school board and the police have no choice but to close down any school with such a threat in todays loony society. Don't worry about what this will cost as we all know, money grows on trees.
I truly hope that anyone caught doing this, is very publicly, made an example, and feels the complete weight of the law on their shoulders. A little slap on the wrist by our "Youth Criminal Justice Act" will not do. We must nip this in the butt now.

EDMONTON — Alberta Hutterites have won the right to be issued driver's licenses without pictures after the province's Court of Appeal agreed with their arguments that requiring them to be photographed violates their religious rights.
“The mandatory photo requirement forces the Hutterian Brethren to either breach a sincerely held religious belief against being photographed or cease driving,” said Judge Carole Conrad, writing for the majority of the three-member court. [...]
Nope, no matter how hard I tried I just could not come up with a SINGLE photograph of a Hutterite. They hold such sincere beliefs...
The problem with beliefs is, that they are subject to interpretation. I wonder if the judges did their homework?
Reasonable Grounds
How would you define, "reasonable grounds"? Imagine you are a police officer, you are at the scene of an accident involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian, in a marked cross walk, in a controlled intersection and could smell alcohol on the drivers breath. Would you...
A) Shrug it off as no big deal?
B) Ask the driver for a breath sample?
C) Call the Supreme Court of Canada to get their opinion?
If you chose A, go to the back of the bus! You are a disgrace to your uniform!
If you chose B, congratulations for serving the people you swore to protect. Unfortunately though, it was also the wrong choice. Go to the back of the bus.

The Supreme Court of Canada heard arguments on Thursday about what constitutes reasonable grounds to ask for a breath sample in a case involving impaired driving causing death in Alberta.
If this is the kind of decisions we need our SUPREME COURT to be making.... Lord help us all.

Yes you read the title right. I am giving the Gorical some credit. Apparently, his ranting and raving style is exactly what is needed to get people to be apathetic to his global warming swindle.
The study compared the responses of a group of people shown sensational media coverage with those given the more sober information from scientific reports.
The initial findings suggest that those shown doom-laden messages tended to believe the problem could come to a head further into the future. This group also felt there was little they could do to affect the planet's future.
"Not only is this not a good way of presenting climate change science, but even in trying to effect change, it's self-defeating," Professor Hulme said.

Finally someone involved in the education of our children has enough brains to say something! We seriously need more people like Heather Stilwell. Heather Stilwell is a school trustee in Surrey B.C. who thinks that if "An Inconvenient Truth" is to be shown to students, so should alternate opinions. Give Heather a raise!
After Heather Stilwell heard free copies of "An Inconvenient Truth" were being given to all high schools in B.C., she said she became concerned the film would be shown to students without going through the usual curriculum review process and end up giving them a one-sided view on climate change.
The trustee has tabled a notice of motion at the local school district asking that if the former U.S. vice-president's look at the causes and dangers of climate change is being screened for students, they should also see the British documentary, "The Great Global Warming Swindle."
"I've read enough that there is more than one thought in the issue of climate change, global warming and that Al Gore is not the be all and end all of opinion about that," she said today.

Somethings Fishy
Fishing is my passion. I have no trouble sitting out on the lake for hours upon hours, searching for the big one. I have fished in a few local tournaments, and even managed to win a few prizes. It has never once occurred to me, to cheat to win. Granted the prizes offered are no where near what they offer in the bass tournaments down south, or even out east. This guy is a disgrace to all real fisherman!
Jones, 60, is an avid angler. A divorcé with no family nearby, he sometimes stayed at the shop for hours. He had friends here. So when he placed second in a fishing tournament two weeks ago, the regulars expected he would show up the next morning to crow about it, just as he did after a win the week before.
But his moment of triumph — his trophy plaque and $886 — was the one that got away. He left the winner's circle that day in handcuffs, facing a felony count of theft by deception. Fishermen at the boat ramp cheered his arrest. Others were moved to anger. Fishermen can forgive all kinds of transgressions, but not cheating.

While we are on the subject, has Canada been given a credit for this mega carbon sink that is capable of holding 186 billion tonnes of carbon?
Seeing our family cabin is in a large, virtually untouched portion of the boreal forest, I can't help but like this idea to some degree. There was some logging done around the lake in the 40's and again in the early 70's, but those area's have completely recovered by replanting and mother nature doing her thing. Anyone who went for a hike in these area's that did not know better, would never know they were ever logged. If we could continue to manage our forests as well as they did these area's, I for one have no problem with responsible logging practices. Bigger not Better

Canada's three fastest-growing provinces would get more seats in the House of Commons by 2014 under legislation proposed by the Conservative government on Friday.
Under the bill, Ontario would get 10 more members of Parliament, British Columbia would get seven and Alberta would get five.
Just what we need. 22 more occupants in Canada's largest daycare center. This will only cost you, the tax payer, a minimum of $3,410,000.00 per year. Add that to the $47,740,000.00 in yearly salaries we already pay, which does not include the extra amount for being a "minister of something" and you get $51,150,000.00 per year. That is one hefty daycare bill if you ask me. So, when are these people going to grow up, quit acting like spoiled children and show that they are deserving of the wages we pay them?

Canada Has No Spine
It is no wonder that no one knows how to describe what it is to be Canadian. We are not allowed to have an identity. We are all hyphenated Canadians, whether we like it or not. We are expected to give the country of our origin or that of our ancestors more emphasis than the one we live in. We are not allowed to have Canadian traditions, hockey being one of the few exceptions and even that is debatable. We are expected to bend like a willow in the wind to the traditions of every other country in the world when one of their citizen decides to become Canadian. What is the sense of having a country that is not allowed to have an identity or traditions of its own? Canada has become a jelly fish, Canada has no spine. Our charter of rights , multicultural policies and age of political correctness, have ensured that we shall never have a truly Canadian Identity.
My Grandfather brought his family to Canada in 1926 to give them a better life. He succeeded in doing just that. I can only assume that that is the same reason most people choose to immigrate to Canada. If not, why bother? If so, why do so many want to make Canada more like the country they came from? It makes no sense.
When will Canada become more than just a house, and become a home to the people who choose to live here? When will we become JUST Canadians, not just in name, but in spirit as well? I want the world to know who I am. I am not a /Canadian... I am Canadian! Are you a Canadian too?

You Are Cancer
Don't be looking over your shoulder to find someone else to blame. You and every human on the planet is a cancer cell that will eventually kill its host, planet Earth. That is how Dr. David Suzuki perceives us.
He likened the human condition to that of cancer cells which eventually kill their host, similar to the exponential growth of bacteria within a test tube; doubling every minute and eating away at the single food source in the test-tube. Like bacteria, he asserted, there will soon be no more resources available for us to expend - posing the question, "When do we stop and rethink the way we live?"
I can only assume that he includes himself in that statement, or is he somehow superior to the rest of us? His actions prove that he is not.
Although Suzuki seemed not to be too concerned over wasting our resources by covering his feet with green paint and walking on news print for a photo op, not just once, but twice, he did manage to point out some wasteful behaviors at the Vancouver Sun while playing "Editor for the day".
People need to cut down on the amount of paper they use, he said, noticing page and layout proofs coming off the printer. He also pointed to the bottled water coolers in the newsroom, something he is against.
"Sooner or later, we all have to live and walk the walk," he said. "It's a matter of people changing their habits. Habits are the hardest thing. You can get into a rut."
Yes David, we certainly can get into a rut. Someday perhaps you to can change your habits and walk the talk. "Let those who have not sinned, cast the first stone".

They come up with the most amazing excuses not to do their jobs. A hedge thats too low, a step thats too high, social issues, Unsafe mailbox, just to name a few.

More Monkey Business
I will admit that I am an animal lover. No not that way! Give your head a shake. I have always treated my "pets" like they were one of the family, another child if you would. I have spoiled everyone of my dogs since I was a wee lad. If you have ever read the "header" on this blog, you would have seen this quote: "The more I get to know people, the more I love my dog". There are many reasons for that but the main one is that, no matter what kind of day I have had, how miserable of a mood I am in, I know that my dog will except me and be there with her tail wagging all cheery and rambunctious as always. She makes no judgments at all, nor is there any expectations except perhaps that she will get a treat, or two, or three, or.... Anyways, where was I? Oh yea, although I have just as much and in some cases more respect for my pets than I do for some of the human species and they may even show some human traits, like enjoying watching Animal Planet! I know that they are not a person. They do not have "equal rights" as if they were a person. The right they do have is to be treated in a humane way, anything over and above that is my own doing. I am also very aware that I am solely responsible for the consequences of their actions.
As cute and cuddly as monkeys are, they are NOT a person. They are wild animals and should be treated as such. They should never be taken from the wild and raised as pets. I know it does happen, as not all humans seem to know this or even give a shit. They will do anything for the all mighty dollar. I digress... Now we have some people in Austria who want to have a chimp, named Hiasl, legally declared as a "person". The line "what could possibly go wrong" comes to mind. Where would it end? Perhaps I should be asking will it ever end? This is wrong, very very wrong. What these people need to be doing is to have laws passed to protect animals in these cases, not have them declared a person.

Sorry Hiasl, you are not a person nor shall you ever be one, no matter what some people think. I will agree that you should have the right to be treated humanely, as should any other ANIMAL.

Who's responsible for global warming and what can be done to fix it? Why would someone be harassed just for raising questions? Glenn Beck takes on the media hype surrounding the global warming debate and asks whether some proposed solutions would do more harm than good.
I'm not a big fan, but it looks like it might be worth watching.
The Ice is Melting the Ice is Melting!
Grade 3 science class...
What you will need...
A) Several ice cubes of various sizes. (Small to large)
B) Several identical dishes to place ice cubes on.
What to do...
A) Place one ice cube onto each dish.
B) Place all of the plates on a table or counter where the temperature will be consistent for all of the ice cubes.
C) Watch the ice cubes melt.
D) Note which ice cube completely melts first, and which one completely melts last.
Three main variables determine the rate that the ice will melt.
1) Temperature
2) Surface area
3) Volume
The temperature part of the equation has been a factor since the end of the last ice age. It has been warmer since then... ;)
A larger surface area will also cause ice to melt faster, but that factor also depends on its volume.
A smaller volume of ice will melt faster at the same temperature as that of a larger volume of ice with the same surface area.
The glaciers have indeed been melting for thousands of years thankfully, or the planet would still be shrouded with ice. Which by the way is not very favorable for living things. As the glaciers recede, their volume decreases and the rate they melt increases. It is called physics or more specifically, thermodynamics.
Now I am just assuming that the people making the computer models have pretty accurate estimates on the volumes of ice on the planet as this is fairly easy to calculate (surface area multiplied by its thickness). So they should have been able to more accurately determine the rate at which they would melt in recent years using existing data of known volumes and temperatures. If they can get this one wrong by such a large margin, how can they, or anyone else, expect them to get the forecasts of future global temperatures correct in their computer models, when there are so many uncertain variables to take into account?
